LATEST research to emerge from Trinity College Dublin suggests that telling someone you’d get along great with a friend invokes a self-preservation instinct in humans that compels them to reject that notion with every fiber of their bodies.
“No, he said it now. It’s in my head. Guaranteed to blow my mind,” is the most common self-talk delivered in response to a friend who says you’re going to love Roisin, who is by all accounts “a gas whore.”
A friend who claims that you will « love » his other friend ranks next to recommending TV shows to watch, attempting to set up blind dates, and saying « borrow my dress, it will suit you » as the most inaccurate and unhelpful statements that a friend can pronounce .
« Roisin may be very nice, but that diagnosis has to come naturally from an individual and not preordained by a mutual friend, » confirmed human behavior professor Dr Sally Sheehan.
« The part of the brain that governs prejudgment kicks in, and try as they might, they instantly take a deep dislike for Roisin, citing characteristics like ‘I don’t know, I just think he has a bit of a face.' »
Being put in the position of forced chemistry and friendship by a friend can also cause a person significant stress.
« The muscle strain caused by a fake smile alone can take years off your life, » Dr. Sheehan confirmed.
